Since our doors reopened and as our town continues to grow, there are more visitors at the McMinnville Public Library. So many that it’s feeling a little cramped upstairs! With your help, we’d like to replace and reconfigure shelves in the Media and Fireplace rooms to allow for more seating areas.

A library is as much a home for books as it is a place for people to gather. Our goal is to raise $25,000 to support new shelves and seats, optimizing the historic space we have for the modern community we serve. Longer and narrower shelves in the Media Room will make more efficient use of space and let in more light. Making one Science Fiction shelf movable will transform the Fireplace Room into a venue for talks, functions, and fairs when needed.

Our library was built in 1912 and there’s only been one addition since (1982) Over the years, we’ve completed improvement projects with support from the Friends of the Library and the Library Foundation. Like the Children’s Room remodel and Plaza Refresh, we hope this project will also make visitors feel welcome and comfortable on the second floor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Aren’t we getting a new library?

Hopefully! We’ll know for certain if an expansion or rebuild is happening within the next year. But, even if that project is approved and goes according to plan, it’d be at least 10 years before it is finished. In the meantime, we need to make efficient use of the space to accommodate our growing community. Also, any of the furniture and shelves sourced now can be moved to a new or expanded library!

Why isn’t the city paying for this?

Our current library functions, but it’s not ideal. The city uses tax dollars to keep our library operational; financial support from the Friends of the Library and the Library Foundation makes our library optimal. We have a good library! However, we rely on community donations or grants to make it great.

How will more shelves in the Media Room create more space?

The planned shelving will be narrower than the ones we have now. They’ll also be pushed closer to one end of the room. This will decrease space between them and increase space for seating near the newspapers and magazines.

I’ve donated to the library before, why are you asking me for more?

Thank you! There are so many things your contributions help fund. From the Bookmobile to Summer Fun, we couldn’t do it without you! The library is a community space as much as it is a service and, with your additional support, we’re able to modernize our space to keep up with our community's needs. Previous fundraising campaigns allowed us to remodel the Children’s Room and refresh the Plaza so that we could offer our programs and resources in a comfortable and safe place. Reconfiguring the Media and Fireplace Rooms will allow the same. You are a vital part of our library’s success!
